- 1.0 Overview
- ============
- This printer driver allows you to print documents from any Windows
- application to your Canon Bubble Jet printer. This dual-mode driver
- is designed to function with either Windows 3.1 or Windows 95. The
- correct driver configuration is automatically installed based on the
- version of Windows you are using.
-
-
- 2.0 Key Features
- ================
- This driver provides a variety of basic and advanced capabilities to
- give you high-speed and high-quality printed output and complete control
- over the printing process. This driver includes several key features
- that are designed for ease of use and flexibility:
-
- 1. Automatic halftone and color adjustment selection
- This feature allows the driver to select its own halftone and color
- setup for the optimum print quality, based on the type of document
- you are printing. This eliminates the need to experiment with many
- complex settings to achieve the best print quality. You can use the
- "Graphics" tab to select this feature.
-
- 2. Print Setup Analyzer
- This feature helps you to eliminate potential problems by checking
- the driver selections and notifying you of any inconsistencies. You
- then have the option of correcting those problems before you proceed
- with printing. The Print Setup Analyzer is enabled by default. You
- can use the "Setting" tab to disable it.
-
- 3. Saved Settings
- This feature allows you to save and retrieve up to four setups. You
- can enter a name for each setup for easy identification. You can use
- the "Setting" tab to save and retrieve the setups.
-
- 4. Remote Printer Controls
- This feature allows you to perform certain maintenance and diagnostic
- operations on your printer from within the driver. If your printer model
- supports this feature, you can use the "Control" tab to use it.
-
-
- 3.0 System Requirements
- =======================
- The Canon BJ Series Windows Printer Driver does not require any additional
- system configuration beyond those required to run Windows 3.1 or Windows 95.
- However, you can improve the performance of your Canon printer if you:
-
- 1. For Windows 3.1, the minimum amount of RAM memory required is 4 MB, although
- 8 MB is recommended. For Windows 95, the minimum amount of RAM memory
- required is 8 MB, although 16 MB is recommended. Increasing the amount of
- RAM memory will result in faster printing and reduce compatibility problems
- with some applications. As an alternative, you can increase the amount of
- virtual memory to reduce the possibility of "low memory" conditions (although
- this does not improve printing performance).
- 2. Allow at least 5 MB of free hard disk space on the drive that contains your
- system's TEMP directory.
-
-

-
-
- 6.0 Using the Print Setup Analyzer
- ===================================
- This printer driver includes an automatic "Print Setup Analyzer" to help you
- use your printer more efficiently. The Print Setup Analyzer identifies any
- inconsistencies in your setup selections, and allows you to correct them if
- you wish. By default, the Print Setup Analyzer is enabled. You can disable
- it in the Setting tab of the Printer Properties dialog box (for Windows 95)
- or the Printer Setup dialog box (for Windows 3.1).
-
-
- 7.0 Hints for Color Printing
- ============================
- If your printer is capable of printing in color and uses interchangeable ink
- cartridges, be sure that a color ink cartridge is installed in the printer.
- You should also select the appropriate Print Model from the Graphics tab in
- the Printer Properties dialog box.
-
- 1. Select the "Color" icon from the Color Model group on the Graphics tab.
- 2. Insert the appropriate color ink cartridge for your printer. If your
- printer supports Drop Modulation Technology and you want to use it, you
- must use a BC-21e color ink cartridge (BJC-4300 or BJC-4650) or a BC-11e
- color ink cartridge (for the BJC-80).
- 3. Select the appropriate Print Model:
- - "Automatic" selects the halftoning methods to produce optimum print
- quality for all types of images.
- - "Graphics and Text" selects the halftoning methods to produce optimum print
- quality for solid text and business graphics, with the emphasis on
- enhancing color saturation.
- - "Photo" selects the halftoning method to produce optimum print quality for
- scanned photographs or bitmapped images.
- - "Custom" offers more advanced control over halftoning patterns, bit depth,
- color adjustment and intensity. These advanced options are not intended
- for novice users of color printers.
- 4. Use High Resolution Paper or Glossy Paper.
- 5. Select the High Resolution Paper or Glossy Paper from the Media-type
- drop-down list in the Paper Tab of the driver.
-
- Note: For optimum color matching with your screen, select the "Photo" setting
- as the Print Model in the Graphics tab, and use a higher quality medium, such
- as Glossy Paper, High Resolution Paper or High Gloss Film.
-
- If you need printing speed rather than print quality, go to the Custom
- Setting dialog box and click on the Fast Color icon. Be careful not to change
- any other settings in this dialog, since it is intended for experienced users
- of color printers only.
-
-
- 8.0 Hints for Photo Color Printing
- ==================================
- The Canon BJC-240, BJC-250, BJC-4200, BJC-4300, BJC-4550 and BJC-4650
- printer models are capable of printing in a special "Photo Color" mode,
- which produces optimal color output quality for photographic (bitmap)
- images. This mode requires a different ink cartridge and special media
- to be used. To print in Photo Color mode, use the following procedure:
-
- 1. Select the "Photo Color" mode in the Graphics Tab of the driver.
- 2. Insert a BC-06 Photo Color ink cartridge (for BJC-240 or BJC-250),
- a BC-22 Photo Color ink cartridge (for BJC-4200, BJC-4300, BJC-4550
- and BJC-4650). If your printer supports Drop Modulation Technology
- and you want to use it, you must use a BC-22e color ink cartridge
- (BJC-4300 and BJC-4650 only).
- 3. Use High Resolution or Glossy paper.
- 4. Select the High Resolution Paper or Glossy Paper from the Media-type
- drop-down list in the Paper Tab of the driver.
-
- All other driver settings are automatically selected. After printing an image
- with Photo Color ink, please allow the ink to dry for 15-30 minutes.
-
-
- 9.0 Hints for Monochrome Printing
- =================================
- All Canon Bubble Jet printer models are capable of printing in monochrome mode.
- If your printer is also capable of printing in color and uses interchangeable
- ink cartridges, you should install a black ink cartridge for better printing
- efficiency. Then use the following procedure on your computer system:
-
- 1. If you have a color printer, select the "Monochrome" icon from the Color
- Model group on the Graphics tab (this selection is not available for
- monochrome-only printer models).
- 2. Select the appropriate Print Model:
- - "Automatic" selects the halftoning methods to produce optimum print
- quality for all types of images.
- - "Graphics and Text" selects the halftoning methods to produce optimum
- print quality for solid text and business graphics.
- - "Photo" selects the halftoning method to produce optimum print quality
- for scanned photographs or bitmapped images.
- - "Custom" offers more advanced control over halftoning patterns and
- intensity. These advanced options are not intended for novice users.
-
-
- 10.0 Cautions, Limitations and Restrictions
- ==========================================
- 1. If your printer is capable of printing in color, do not attempt to print
- in "Color" mode when a black ink cartridge is installed in your printer.
- The results will be unpredictable.
-
- 2. A known problem in Corel Mosaic Version 5.0 may cause incomplete printed
- output. Please contact Corel Corporation for an update.
-
- 3. For some printer models, the Cartridge Detection feature may not function
- if you have used the BJ Setup Utility to set the Printer Control Mode to
- the "Automatic" mode. To use the Cartridge Detection feature, you should
- set the Printer Control Mode to either LQ or BJ mode.
-
- 4. For Windows 95, if you are using the "Browse" method of installing this
- driver from the "Add Printer Wizard", you must select the file named
- "CANONBJ.INF" from the driver diskette. If you select the file named
- "OEMSETUP.INF", the Cartridge Detection feature will not function correctly.
-
- 5. If you install this driver in Windows 3.1 and later upgrade your system to
- Windows 95, you should re-install this driver in Windows 95.
-
- 6. This driver cannot be used when running Windows 3.1 under OS/2.
-
- 7. If you cancel the driver installation process before all of the diskettes
- are copied, the driver will not be installed completely, even though it
- appears in the list of Installed Printers. You must therefore re-install
- the driver and complete the installation process with all required diskettes.
-
- 8. If you receive a message during the installation that this driver is already
- in use, you should close all open applications and try installing the driver
- again.
-
- 9. Some thin lines that are not solid black may not print using the driver's
- default settings. To work around this, select the "Photo" setting as the
- Print Model in the Graphics tab. This will use an alternative dot-placement
- method that produces better results.
-
- 10. This driver supports a special "transparent" mode when printing
- overlapping bitmapped graphics. However, some applications (such
- as PhotoShop v3.0, Claris Works and possibly other) do not support
- the "transparent" mode correctly, and this can cause printing errors.
- Other applications incorrectly set the background color for bitmapped
- graphics, and this can also cause printing errors. To work around
- these problems, the driver will automatically add the following lines
- to your system's WIN.INI file when it is installed:
-
- [CanonDriver]
- ForceOpaque=1
- PhotoShopBugFix=1
-
- To disable these work-arounds, you can edit the WIN.INI file and change
- the "1" to "0" and then restart Windows. For most applications, you
- should leave these items set to "1".
-
- 11. A blank dialog box may appear when you are using Manual Feed mode. When
- this dialog box appears, you should insert a piece of paper and click on
- the OK button.
-
- 12. Some "Bar Code" TrueType fonts may be printed with some extraneous lines.
-
- 13. If you select "Automatic" from Print Model in Graphics tab sheet or "Auto"
- from Halftoning in Custom Setting dialog and start printing, some part of
- the printed image that should be printed with "Diffusion" halftoning may be
- printed with "Fine" halftoning. To correct this problem, select "Diffusion"
- as the Halftoning in Custom Setting dialog.
-
- 14. When sharing a document file among several computer systems, make sure that
- all of the fonts used by the document are installed on all computer systems.
- Otherwise, some text fonts will not be printed correctly.
-
- 15. In Windows 3.1, the Cartridge Detection mechanism is unable to distinguish
- between a regular color ink cartridge and a photo color ink cartridge. Be
- sure to install the correct ink cartridge to avoid printing problems.
-
- 16. In Windows 3.1, Cartridge Detection MUST be disabled in the Setting tab of
- the printer driver if you have a Canon MultiPASS device AND another Canon BJ
- color printer installed on the same system.
-
- 17. When printing from Adobe Photoshop, you must select the "RGB" mode rather
- than the "CMYK" mode to avoid printing some incorrect colors.
-
- 18. Banner Printing Tips
- a) MS Publisher 97 - to avoid some overlapping printed results between
- page boundaries, you must select "File/Print/Tile Printing Options"
- and set the value of "Overlap tiles" to 0.
- b) Print Shop Ensemble III
- To avoid any gaps between pages, use Standard quality instead of Draft.
- c) For best results, you should only print one copy of a banner at a time.
- If you request multiple copies, the printed results may be unpredictable.
-
- 19. Certain page sizes may be supported by your printer models and the printer
- driver software, but not supported by the application software. These are
- limitations of your application, and you should contact your application
- vendor in such cases.
